    Description

    n8n connects more than 400 services in a visual workflow editor and ships with native AI features, including more than 70 LangChain-based nodes for agents, memory, vector databases, and LLM calls. Anthropic or OpenAI pipelines can be wired directly on the workflow canvas without leaving the platform. As a fair-code licensed project, the source code is open, with restrictions on commercial resale by third parties.

    The cloud version bills by complete workflow executions rather than by individual operations or steps, which keeps costs predictable even for complex workflows with many internal steps. The community edition, by contrast, can be self-hosted and offers unlimited executions free of charge there, in exchange for requiring your own operation and maintenance.

    Limitations and notes

    • Self-Hosting Means Self-Operation The community edition is free but requires you to run, maintain, and host your own infrastructure.
    • AI Assistant in Early Preview According to the provider, the feature is not yet mature and its scope and behavior may change.
    • Credit Card Only for Business Trial The Starter and Pro trials run without a credit card, while the Business plan trial requires one on file.
    • Plans in Flux Prices, execution quotas, and credit amounts change.

    Quick start

    1. Self-host the community edition via Docker or sign up for n8n Cloud.
    2. Start a workflow with a trigger, such as an app event, a cron schedule, or a chat input.
    3. Add pre-built app nodes or use the HTTP request node to connect to services without a dedicated node.
    4. Add AI nodes where needed, for example for summaries, questions about your own documents, or multi-step agents.
    5. Test individual steps, replay data where needed, and then move the workflow into production.

    Tips

    • Re-run individual steps instead of the whole workflow, this saves time while testing and avoids re-triggering slow events.
    • For services without a dedicated node, use the HTTP request node or import an existing curl command directly.
    • On self-hosted instances, add npm packages in the code node when the built-in functions are not enough.
    • For high throughput, switch to queue mode with multiple worker instances.
    • Move workflows between environments using Git-based version control and a push-pull pattern.

    Access

    The community edition is open source, self-hostable, and free with no limit on executions. The cloud version starts at a low double-digit euro amount per month for a limited execution quota and scales up to several hundred euros per month for larger teams, each tier including a monthly AI credit allowance.
