    Description

    NotebookLM is a notebook tool from Google built on the Gemini models that works exclusively with the sources the user provides. You create a notebook, upload PDFs, Google Docs, YouTube links, websites or audio files, and the tool answers questions about them with a direct reference to the relevant passage in the source. Unlike a general chatbot, NotebookLM does not draw on open-ended world knowledge; it stays with what it has been given.

    Beyond the source chat, the tool generates Audio Overviews (dialogue-style podcast summaries with two AI hosts, now interactively queryable, in over 50 languages including German), Video Overviews (short explainer videos built from the sources) and mind maps as a visual structure of the core content. Automatically generated summaries, study guides and timelines are also included. A notebook holds up to 50 sources on the free tier, and up to 300 on the paid Plus tier.

    The honest limit: the tool has no web access, answers stay strictly within the uploaded sources. The quality of the results depends directly on the quality and completeness of the documents fed in; incomplete or flawed sources lead to correspondingly weak answers. For multilingual Audio Overviews, quality in German is good, while in smaller languages it is, according to the source, sometimes a bit stilted.

    Quick start

    1. Open notebooklm.google and sign in with a Google account; the free tier is enough for an initial test.
    2. Create a new notebook and add sources, such as PDFs, Google Docs, YouTube links, websites or audio files.
    3. Ask questions in the chat, generate an Audio Overview or open the mind map; the host can be asked follow-up questions live during the Audio Overview.

    Tips

    • Keep notebooks cleanly separated by topic; one notebook should correspond to one project or subject area.
    • For meeting preparation, put the agenda, briefing documents and previous notes into one shared notebook and then ask targeted questions.
    • The Audio Overview works well for an overview on the go, for example while commuting, with the option to ask the host detailed follow-up questions live.
    • Mind maps can be used for presentations as an exportable structure of the core content.
    • Upgrading to the Plus tier is worthwhile with more than 50 sources per notebook or heavy use of Audio Overviews.

    Access

    NotebookLM is available at notebooklm.google with a Google account. Entry is free; a paid Plus tier mainly raises the limit on sources per notebook.
