    Assessment

    AI features

    • Automatic linking between documents From references between documents, Outline automatically builds a network of backlinks that can be searched across the entire knowledge base.
    • Automated document creation through business apps Connections to existing programs can be set up so that documents in Outline are created and updated automatically.

    Suitable for

    • Teams that want to build a searchable, hierarchically structured knowledge base with automatic backlinks
    • Organizations that want to choose between a hosted cloud service and a self-managed installation on their own infrastructure
    • Multilingual teams that need an interface with RTL support and translations into 20 languages
    • Less suitable for Less suitable for teams that want to work permanently for free in the cloud without running their own infrastructure, since after the 30-day trial the knowledge base becomes read-only without a payment method on file

    Limitations and notes

    • Read-only access after the trial After 30 days of the free trial, the knowledge base becomes read-only without a payment method on file; documents can still be exported during this time.
    • Pricing tiered by team size Plans are based on the number of members, and as a team grows it automatically moves to the next tier.
    • Above 200 members only via the provider Cloud-hosted teams with more than 200 members need to contact the provider directly instead of a self-service booking.
    • Self-hosting is your own responsibility Anyone not using the hosted service takes on full operation and maintenance of the installation according to the project documentation.
    • Licensed under BSL 1.1 The source code is open on GitHub and is licensed under the Business Source License 1.1.

    Quick start

    1. Sign up at getoutline.com, either with one click or with Google SSO.
    2. Create a team and try it free for the first 30 days.
    3. Create your first documents and nest them hierarchically.
    4. Set up access rights through user groups, guest accounts, and public sharing.
    5. Connect Slack, Google Docs, or Figma as needed to embed content and post updates into channels.

    Tips

    • Use the Alfred Powerpack integration to search the knowledge base directly from the Mac desktop without opening a browser.
    • Use slash commands in Slack to search documentation without leaving chat, and to post updates automatically into channels.
    • Add a payment method or export all documents before the 30-day trial ends, to avoid read-only mode.
    • Check early, as a team grows, which pricing tier the next increase in members falls into.
    • Go through the project's hosting documentation fully before running a production self-hosted instance.
