Description
Remotion is a framework with publicly available source code on GitHub, under its own license, for generating videos as React code. Three paths lead to the result: an idea can be turned directly into a video through a coding agent, a video can be edited and animated through drag and drop, with changes written back into the code automatically, or a video can be built entirely programmatically by connecting data and managing the structure in code. In all three cases, the React code remains the source of truth, and it is possible to switch between the paths at any time. A new project is created with npx create-video@latest or by pasting a ready-made coding agent prompt into Claude Code, Codex, or OpenCode, which also lets you choose a package manager, a template, and whether to enable Tailwind and Agent Skills.
A local Node.js installation is required, and Bun is mostly supported as a runtime. Because the code remains the source of truth throughout, Remotion is aimed at people who want to work with React or use a coding agent for it, it is not a purely visual editor with no connection to code. For production use in applications or systems such as video editors, prompt-to-video apps, or an embedded Remotion Player, a separate license tier applies with a minimum spend of 100 US dollars per month, while developers on purely automation projects do not need a seat. Additional building blocks such as the Editor Starter template with the essential building blocks of a video editor or the customizable Timeline component are separate, paid products.
Compared with classic video editing software or pure timeline editors, Remotion's strength shows where videos need to be generated automatically and at scale from data or templates, for example rendering many videos on your own infrastructure, or where video creation or a video player should be embedded directly into your own application. Anyone who wants to work exclusively in a visual editor, without ever touching code, will find a more direct path in classic editing software.
