DeepL is an AI-powered translation platform made up of four products: a translator for text, documents, and images, the writing assistant DeepL Write, the real-time voice translator DeepL Voice, and an API that embeds all three functions into other systems. Text can be translated directly into more than 30 languages, and documents can be translated by drag and drop into more than 100 languages while preserving formatting, with support for formats such as PDF, Word, PowerPoint, and HTML. The tool also translates individual images, for example screenshots or restaurant menus. All of this runs on an in-house LLM technology trained specifically for language, which DeepL states it has trained on proprietary data with the help of thousands of language experts.
Without a Pro plan, lower limits apply to text and document translation, with a capped monthly document volume and a smaller number of custom glossaries. The paid Pro plan raises these limits and adds further features: unlimited text translation, a higher document limit, expanded glossaries, CAT tool integration, team administration with single sign-on, and additional security features. For Pro customers, the provider guarantees that their data is not used to train its own models.
Compared with generic translation tools, DeepL positions itself through its language-specialized, in-house language model and through additional features such as glossaries, tone control, and the Customization Hub for enforcing terminology and brand voice company-wide. Anyone who only needs translation occasionally for individual texts can get by without a Pro plan.
