Description
ChatGPT remains the most used AI assistant worldwide. Its core model is now GPT-5.6 with a visible Thinking Mode for more complex tasks, complemented by Canvas for collaborative work on documents and code directly inside the chat. The former Operator, or Agent Mode, is now called ChatGPT Agent and still handles autonomous browser tasks, joined since July 2026 by the new ChatGPT Work mode for multi-step projects that deliver a finished result.
Beyond text, ChatGPT also covers multimodal use cases: image generation with GPT Image 2, the successor to DALL-E 3, image analysis via Vision, and a Voice Mode for natural spoken dialogue with multiple voices and live translation. The Sora video feature was discontinued in spring 2026 and is no longer available in ChatGPT. Through Custom GPTs and the GPT Store, you can also build your own chatbot variants tailored to recurring tasks.
As an honest limitation, even GPT-5.6 can still fabricate facts, and results should be cross-checked for fact-critical work. The free plan only has reduced access to the current flagship model, German-language text output is good but occasionally includes anglicisms, and web search is not always active automatically, so it should be triggered explicitly for current data. On data protection: consumer chats can be used for training, an opt-out is available, while enterprise and API usage is described as GDPR compliant.
